Talk:Advice for interim library directors

I would echo Pam's advice about acting as if you are the library director now. Don't be afraid to make changes and advance your agenda.
Talk to the person you're replacing as much as possible, decant knowledge from their heads while you still have them there.
As much as possible, leave your old position behind. Don't transfer your phone number because it's easier, you have a new position, move into it.
And enjoy the fact that you can say for a few months "Well, it's not my fault, the previous director did it."
Applied but didn't get the job -- Bill Drew 11:44, 24 June 2008 (EDT)
I am one of those interim directors that applied but didn't get the job. My biggest advice is to suck it up and get over it. (GRIN) Seriously, it is a big blow to not get a job you may have been doing for a while. I have served as interim director since January 1, 2008. Our new director starts June 30. At times it is difficult but it is also not the end of the world. My current boss (Dean of Instruction) has been extremely supportive and we have discussed how he wants me to assist the new director. My one suggestion is don't accept an offer to serve as interim director if you are new to the library. I started here last August. Buyer Beware!
