Library leadership institutes
Canada
- The Institute's mission is to assist professional librarians to develop, strengthen, and exercise their leadership skills so that they may be better equipped to formulate, articulate, and achieve the future changes required by libraries into the 21st century. Based on the premise of experiential learning, the Institute includes group and individual exercises, as well as the opportunity to learn in conversation with mentors, who have been chosen for their own leadership skills, and who will be participating as volunteers.
Florida
- A year-long comprehensive series of learning sessions that focuses on developing an understanding of leadership, within a conceptual framework and practical applications. Participants attend 10 days of training throughout the year, covering mentoring and leadership styles, exemplary leadership, leadership and diversity, the present state of leadership, community advocacy and the future of leadership
Illinois
- The statewide library community's proactive movement to recruit and nurture future Illinois library leaders. Objectives include self-assessment; discovering and developing personal values; identifying the local, state and global environment; fostering and expanding skills and tools for personal, professional and positional leadership; creating a cohort group; establishing mentoring relationships; and developing a vision of and beyond the field of librarianship.
Iowa
- The Iowa Library Association has established a comprehensive leadership development program to ensure that its members are prepared to actively shape the future of Iowa libraries. Institute attendees participate in activities designed to help them: Recognize themselves as leaders and develop the confidence to become change agents in their libraries as well as in the larger community; Assess their personal leadership style and develop the skills to use that style for effective decision making; Seek creative solutions to shape the future of the Iowa Library Association and library service in Iowa; Connect to a supportive network of successful library leaders.
Maryland
- Recognizing the need to develop library leaders for libraries of the future, a group of Maryland librarians, with the support of the Maryland State Department of Education Division of Library Development and Services (DLDS) held the first Maryland Library Leadership Institute in 1998... Thirty-two participants attended a 5 day seminar... The emphasis of the Institute is the development of individual leadership skills and the creation of a leadership network. Candidates were nominated by their library directors based on demonstrated interest in leadership and commitment to library services. Four institutes have been held since its inception and have been coordinated by the Maryland Library Association. Graduates from the Institute have gone on to various leadership positions in their library systems.
Massachusetts
- Harvard Institutes for Higher Education is collaborating with the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) to present this institute. The goal is to increase participants' capacity to lead and to manage. The program helps to answer two key questions: How well-positioned is my organization to meet current and future challenges? How effective is my own leadership?
- To cultivate, educate, and support emerging leaders working in and/or for libraries in Massachusetts. LLMA provides individuals a venue for collaboration and opportunities to develop leadership skills.
Mountain Plains Library Association
- No institute in 2008. The site links to comments from 2007 attendees and attendee lists and photos from previous institutes.
Nevada
- The 2007 theme was "Facilitating to Lead!" Thirty librarians attended the four-day institute.
New England
- NELLS is an intensive 4-day course for "up and coming" library leaders. The purpose of this symposium is to foster the mentoring and development of leaders for library associations (state and regional). NELLS was created through a cooperative effort of the New England Library Association and all six New England state library associations.
New York
- An educational program for emerging leaders in the library profession. Participants will gain the skills and knowledge they need to advance up the career ladder in library management. Enrollees are required to complete ten courses over a three year period to receive a Leadership and Management Academy Certificate.
Ohio
- A residential, five-day leadership training program that has developed the talents of emerging library leaders for over a decade. Most recently held in 2006.
Pacific Northwest Library Association
- Designed to provide opportunities for emerging library leaders in the Pacific Northwest to cultivate their leadership skills and potential. A week-long intensive institute held in a retreat setting to guarantee minimal distractions in order for participants to make the most of the institute.
Tennessee
- The Summer Institute for Academic Library Leadership focuses on the higher education context in which libraries exist. The institute explores new roles for libraries that may emerge from that context to support the goals and priorities of the parent institution. Participants identify ways to position their libraries to be agents for change within their institutions, in order to strengthen support for the library’s services and resources. The institute is highly participative and tailored to the interests of those selected as summer fellows.
Texas
- The program provides leadership training for the Texas Library Association membership by offering an annual Leadership Development Institute for librarians and laypersons. The institute is designed to foster leadership capabilities, define leadership development activities for TLA members and foster cultural diversity in library leadership.
Wyoming
- The Wyoming Library Leadership Institute began in 2000. "There are two institutes. During the even-year summer we will hold the library leadership institute for new attendees. During the odd years we will hold an advanced leadership institute open to anyone who has attended in the past. The Library Leadership Institute exists to provide opportunities for learning, mentoring and developing leadership skills to promote the personal and professional growth of the Wyoming library community."
Others
- A six week long course designed to teach school librarians about Web 2.0 tools and how they can teach others about the opportunities these new technologies provide. Sponsored by the School Library Systems of Genesee Valley, Monroe 1 and Monroe 2/Orleans BOCES. A six-week course, primarily online, held in the fall of 2007.
- Executive Leadership Institute (ELI) - Urban Libraries Council
- Developed specifically to build the skills tomorrow’s urban library leaders will need, ELI is aimed at moving our entire industry forward. An intensive 10-month program.

- According to ARL's strategic goals for 2005-2009, there is a need to focus on new and expanding roles for ARL libraries to engage in the transformations affecting research and undergraduate and graduate education. ARL's Leadership Development initiatives assist research libraries to meet the instructional and research needs of higher education.
- Carolina Leadership Development offers a variety of services and programs for everyone interested in leadership at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This site also provides reading lists for leaders.
- A resource for library leadership training programs, showing program titles, schedules, frequency and contact information.
- The State Library and Archives of Florida has developed a statewide approach to leadership reflected in the five-year plan titled Florida Library Leadership Program: Developing a Statewide Approach 2004-2009. The program identifies strategies designed to assist the State Library and Archives of Florida in helping libraries to develop and maintain leadership skill levels in their organizations and to identify and assist individuals in developing and maintaining self leadership skill development. The Program's goals include a focus on succession planning, talent management, and leadership career development.
- Part of the Free Management Library. Simply put, leadership development is an effort (hopefully, planned in nature) that enhances the learner's capacity to lead people. Very simply put, leading is setting direction and guiding others to follow that direction. A critical skill for leaders is the ability to manage their own learning. The highly motivated, self-directed reader can gain a great deal of learning and other results from using the guidelines and materials in this library topic.
- Created to help current and prospective leaders in businesses, government and not-for-profit enterprises, to develop and build their leadership skills to enhance the abilities of the organizations they lead to achieve their goals. The material at the site will also help organizations in building a cadre of effective leaders to improve the work climate for employees, and in turn improve productivity and morale.
- MindLeaders is an employee and individual performance-improvement company with nearly 25 years of experience in the technology-based, self-paced training field. We provide personalized learning that supports organizational success. Our e-learning tools cover topics ranging from networking in an enterprise environment to personal use of the pc and from healthcare privacy issues to business skills.
- OPAL is a collaborative effort by libraries of all types to provide cooperative web-based programming and training for library users and library staff members. These live, online events are held in an online auditorium where participants can interact via voice-over-IP, text chatting, and synchronized browsing.
- The Library Development Bureau provides consultant services and technical assistance to create, improve and strengthen library/ information and literacy services.
