Help:External searches

From PLN

Jump to: navigation, search

The PALINET Leadership Network home page provides two specialized external searches:

 1. A Google Custom Search Engine box that searches a group of resources identified as likely to be useful to PLN users.
 2. A Worldcat.org search box to find books and other resources in Worldcat.org.

In some cases, it might be reasonable to include a special external search within a page. The rest of this page describes that possibility:

It is possible to create external searches of a topic using key words using a template.

For example, this is something that would work for Google:

<span style="border: 1px solid #CCD5DB;"> {}</span>
Usage
Allows to establish a link to a search query at the Google search engine:
<div style="display:table; width:auto;"><pre>
Term1+Term2+Term3
</pre></div>

</noinclude>

The usage is simple. firstTerm+Second+etc

It is also possible to do phrases by using %22Term1+Term2+etc%22

 • External searches are useful where an article requires certain keywords to make an effective search.
 • For the editor it allows quick and painless web searches.

Other applications of the template include searching Forums.

Note: Wikipedia has an interwiki prefix with a similar affect, so you can link to google results with Google:firstTerm+Second+etc, although templates are still useful for linking other search engines.
